How this calculator works

Both regimes are computed with the same four steps: subtract the standard deduction (and, for the old regime, any Chapter VI-A deductions you enter) from your gross income to get taxable income; apply the progressive slab rates to get tax before rebate; apply the Section 87A rebate if you qualify; then add surcharge (for high incomes) and 4% Health & Education Cess.

New tax regime slabs — FY 2025-26 & FY 2026-27

Up to ₹4,00,000Nil
₹4,00,000 – ₹8,00,0005%

₹12,00,000 – ₹16,00,00015%

₹20,00,000 – ₹24,00,00025%
Above ₹24,00,00030%

Standard deduction: ₹75,000. Section 87A rebate: up to ₹60,000, making net taxable income up to ₹12,00,000 effectively tax-free. Marginal relief smooths the transition for taxable income between ₹12,00,000 and ₹12,75,000. Surcharge is capped at 25% in this regime (the 37% surcharge slab does not apply).

Old tax regime slabs — resident individuals below 60

Annual taxable incomeTax rate
Up to ₹2,50,000Nil
₹2,50,000 – ₹5,00,0005%
₹5,00,000 – ₹10,00,00020%
Above ₹10,00,00030%

Senior citizens (60–80 years) get a nil band up to ₹3,00,000; super senior citizens (80+) get a nil band up to ₹5,00,000 — both otherwise follow the same slab structure above. Standard deduction: ₹50,000. Section 87A rebate: up to ₹12,500, for taxable income up to ₹5,00,000.

Surcharge (on the tax amount, not income): 10% above ₹50 lakh total income, 15% above ₹1 crore, 25% above ₹2 crore, 37% above ₹5 crore. The new regime caps this at 25%. Marginal relief limits the surcharge so it never exceeds the extra income that crossed the threshold.

This calculator covers salaried and pensioner resident individuals with income from salary. It does not cover capital gains (taxed separately at special rates), business income, HRA exemption calculation, or non-resident taxation. For those situations, use this as a starting estimate and confirm with a chartered accountant or incometax.gov.in.
